Three women — two sisters and their aunt — were arrested for allegedly robbing more than a dozen jewellery shops in Raigad, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane.
The women were caught on CCTV cameras slipping in the jewellery and have confessed to committing the crimes, said the police.
The accused — Pinki Gaud, Jyoti Solanki and Nirmala Salunkhe, 55 — are residents of Ambernath area in Thane.
Gaud and Solanki said they are 28 years old and are sisters, but the police are verifying their statements. The police said the three got help from two men, who are wanted, in the crime.
“When we came to know that the three women are in to cheating, robbery and other crimes, we laid a trap and caught them in Ambernath. We found that they are wanted by Goregaon police station in Raigad. The accused used to mostly rob jewellery shops by diverting the staffer’s attention,” said J Ranaware, senior police inspector, Thane crime branch unit 5.
“They used to do a recce of the area first and then target a jewellery store. They used to ask the staffers or owner to show them some jewellery items. Once the worker’s looked the other way, they used to slip in one gold item and leave the store,” said Ranaware.
They made a point not to visit the area for the next two to three months.
MG Temkar, police constable from Goregaon police station, Raigad, said, “The accused were wanted in a cheating case from last year. They have many cases against them. They have been remanded in police custody.”
