The cabin of the trailer burst into flames due to the impact of the collision.

An unidentified driver died after his trailer collided with a container truck on the busy Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway near Haloli village in Palghar on Friday morning. According to the police, the driver got stuck and his cabin burst into flames. They suspect that he fell asleep while driving.

The driver of the container truck is absconding. The brand new cars inside the trailer were not damaged.

“On Friday morning, the container was heading towards Mumbai, when the trailer truck heading in the same direction hit the container from behind,” said PSI Dharmendra Sonawane of Manor police station. “The cabin of the trailer immediately caught fire due to the impact, and the unidentified driver got trapt inside the cabin and died instantly,” he said.

“We have registered a case under Section 304 (a) (causing death by negligence) and Sections of the Motor Vehicle Act against the unknown driver who is absconding,” said PSI Sonawane. “As the Mumbai-bound highway lane was clear in the morning, we suspect the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel,” said the official.

There was a traffic hold up on the Mumbai lane for four hours due to the mishap, but now the traffic on both the lanes is normal, said the official.

“We had to call the fire brigade to control the blaze. We have also called the Ahmedabad-based transport agency as well as the car dealer for questioning in this regard,” he said.
