More than three weeks after a 21-year-old man from Pune was found dead near the Dehrang dam on Panvel-Matheran road, two men were arrested for allegedly killing him.

The Panvel taluka police have not revealed the identity of the accused, who are said to be from Panvel, as it may hamper the investigation.

Omkar Kundan Aarne’s body was spotted by passers-by on April 27, who informed the police. According to the post-mortem report, he was shot dead.

“The deceased was wearing a blue t-shirt, grey track pants and black shoes. After the post-mortem report, we registered a case under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unidentified person/s,” said an officer from Panvel taluka police station.

The Pune police had earlier registered a missing person’s case, following a complaint by Aarne’s wife, Sudha. Aarne used to go to difference places in search of job. He lived with his wife and a child at a chawl in Pune’s Yerawada.

“When he went missing, he had Rs1,000 and a mobile phone with him. However, we did not them on his body,” said the officer. Prakash Nilewad, assistant commissioner of police (Panvel division), confirmed the arrest.

“We suspect more people are involved in the crims. Our teams have fanned out to different places; therefore, we cannot say anything about the identity of the arrested people. We may reveal the names on Monday,” Nilewad said. The police are still probing the motive behind the murder.
