60-year-old injured in drink driving accident

MUMBAI: A 60-year-old man suffered serious head injuries after his scooter was rammed by a speeding car on Lalbaug bridge in Kalachowky in Central Mumbai on Sunday.

Police suspect the car driver was drunk and have registered a case of drink driving against him.

The victim, Aarif Usman Nunsumar was riding pillion on his son Abid’s scooter. Nunsumar was rushed to KEM Hospital. He is currently in the intensive care unit.

The car drive, Deepak Murli Singh, 32, is the watchman of a housing society and had taken its car out to go for a drive with some friends.

The Kalachowky police said the incident took place at 12.30 am. The victim and his son were returning home after attending a religious programme in Masjid Bunder when the car hit their scooter from behind.

The police said Singh was driving under the influence of alcohol.

He was subjected to a medical test and his blood samples have been taken.

Singh was arrested under sections 279 and 338 of the Indian penal code amounting to rash driving and grievous hurt and under 185 of Motor Vehicles Act for driving in a drunken state or under the influence of drugs.

He was remanded in judicial custody and granted bail by a magistrate’s court.
