With the deadline of November 26 to submit the draft Development Plan (DP) 2034 in front an elected body of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) nearing, the civic officials will need an extension to carry out the hearings, said sources.

Civic chief Ajoy Mehta will be writing to the state’s urban development department for an extension of 35 days for submitting the draft DP 2034, they said. The draft DP is expected to be passed by the general body, after which it will be sent to the state government for its nod.

After seeking several extensions before publishing the revised draft DP, this is the first extension after the DP was put in the public domain for suggestions and objections in May. Almost two months after the last day of suggestions and objections, the civic body appointed elected representatives as members of the planning committee, which has resulted in a delay.

Hindustan Times had reported that the panel appointed to study suggestions and objections to the DP would get just a month to go through over 80,000 suggestions and objections and experts had opined that more time would be needed for the same as more people needed to be heard before finalising the blueprint for the city’s development for the next two decades.

A senior civic official said, “We will be writing to the urban development department of the state government, seeking an extension of 35 days.”

The first meeting of the planning committee members, which includes experts and elected representatives, was held with the civic chief on Saturday. Mehta explained the procedure and the important points of the draft DP through a detailed presentation.

The first hearing on the suggestions/objections is set to begin from Monday onwards, where it will be divided into several groups.
