BHIWANDI: Unwilling to take chances following the Sunday’s mishap, in which eight people lost their lives after an illegal L-shaped building collapsed partially in Bhiwandi, officers from the Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC) have decided to demolish the remaining 12 buildings it termed unfit for living.

The demolition will happen in the next two days.

As per statistics available with the BNMC, of the total of 655 dangerous structures its surveyed 206 have been classified as extremely dangerous.

Of these, 17 were declared unfit for living.

Sunil Zhalke, PRO for BNMC, said, “We have requested for additional police force to help us evacuate residents of the remaining 12 buildings, so that the demolition work can commence. As a precautionary measure, we have discontinued water and power supply to these unfit buildings.”

Civic chief E Ravindran told HT, “Quick action has been taken to demolish the 12 unfit buildings. Besides, occupants of the extremely dangerous building have been warned and asked to vacate immediately or face forceful eviction if needed. Immediate action has been initiated to avert another tragedy.”

Sunday’s collapse occurred at Hanuman Tekdi, wherein a 35-year-old building collapsed partially.

While eight people lost their lives, including the landlord, three others sustained multiple injuries.

The collapse was second in the past one week.
