MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government told the Bombay high court on Thursday that it is examining the legality of imposing radio-frequency transmitters on convicts released on furlough or parole. This would enable the authorities to keep an eye on the convicts’ movement during their time out of prison through global positioning system (GPS), said the government.

Acting advocate-general Rohit Deo informed the division bench of justices Abhay Oka and Mridula Bhatkar that the suggestion was made by the inspector general of prisons to consider fitting radio frequency transmitter on the convicts released on furlough or parole. Advocate Deo said that the government is examining the legality and validity of making it compulsory for convicts to wear a transmitter so that their movements can be monitored. “This is being followed in all developed countries,” he said in support of the recommendation.
