MUMBAI: The number of first year junior college (FYJC) applicants in Mumbai crossed the 2-lakh mark, the highest ever, in special round 1 held last week. The more than 30,000 applicants who failed to secure a seat can now apply in special round 2, which began on Tuesday.

Of the total confirmed admissions, 1.59 lakh applicants bagged seats under the general category, while 43,596 applicants procured seats under various quotas like minority, in-house and management.

For the first time this year, admissions under the general category were only done online. Earlier, after applying online, admission to vacant seats were conducted offline. Even applicants for seats reserved under quotas had to first register online.

Education officials said multiple admission rounds and online tracking of quota seats resulted in an increase in the number of applications. “This year, all the admissions were conducted online and hence, everything could be tracked. Until last year, we had no statistics on students who took admission offline,” said an official.

The state’s education department conducted four regular admission rounds in June-July and a fifth round in early August for applicants. Three special rounds were then scheduled — the first was held from August 5 to August 13 and two more rounds will be held till August 30 — for all applicants, including those who want to change the seats allotted to them, ATKT students and first-time applicants.

The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) supplementary exams held in July instead of September-October are likely to increase the number of FYJC applicants, said the official. “Every year, the supplementary exams take place after the admission process is over and so, these students do not apply for admissions online. But this year, we can accommodate them in the upcoming special rounds,” he said.
