Between June 1 and 8.30pm Thursday, Santacruz recorded 746.3mm of rainfall against the average June rainfall recorded at 523.1mm. During the same period, Colaba recorded 562.3mm of rain. Sporadic rain during the day gave way to heavy rain and winds on Thursday evening.

Between 8.30am and 8.30pm, the Colaba weather station recorded 14.2mm rain. Santacruz recorded 37.9mm of rain.

However, India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said the suburbs recorded a total of 33.4mm between 5.30pm to 8.30pm.

Colaba recorded only 7.6mm during the same period.

Under the IMD’s new classification ,15.6 mm to 64.4mm of rain is ‘moderate’, 64.5mm to 115.5mm is ‘heavy’, 115.6mm to 204.4mm is ‘very heavy’ and more than 204.5mm is ‘extreme’.

On Thursday, both maximum and minimum temperatures were closer to normal levels as compared to the previous days. Humidity levels were above the 90% mark.

The weather bureau predicted isolated heavy rain over the K onkan coast, including Mumbai, for Friday.

“The stretch from Konkan to Goa can expect widespread rain, which means 76-100% rain at most weather stations in the area,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, IMD.

“The offshore trough extending from south Gujarat to Kerala has intensified and heavy rain can be expected for the next 24 hours from Thursday,” he added.
