The tempo standing at the Bainganwadi traffic signal went on to hit the youngsters. The incident took place at 8.30am, the police said.

Chandrakant Kalegaonkar, 15, and his two friends, Rohit Tambe, 19, and Akash, all residents of Bhim Nagar in Govandi, were on their way to a florist to buy a garland for the Ambedkar Jayanti celebration.

They were crossing the road near the Bainganwadi junction signal when a speeding truck rammed into a stationary tempo. Due to the impact, the tempo hit Kalegaonkar and Tambe.

“Kalegaonkar succumbed to his injuries before he was taken to the Shatabdi hospital. The other boy is currently recuperating at Sion hospital and is out of danger. Akash did not sustain any injury,” said Deepak Choudhary, inspector.
Choudhary said the truck driver, Dhanaji Hadatkar, 25, has been detained for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and rash and negligent driving.
