The victims — identified as Amrita Shukla, 29, and Manoj Shukla, 44 — were trapped under the debris before they succumbed to their injuries. The other injured are being treated at Jaslok Hospital.

According to officials, repairs were being carried out on the ground floor of the 115-year-old building. However, there was damage to a pillar, which brought down the first and the second floors around 11.50am.

BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials blamed the collapse on illegal structural changes made to the building.

In its statement, JSW said the collapse appeared to have occurred owing to certain modifications carried out within a part of the ground floor — which does not belong to the JSW Group.
