A 44-year-old Jordanian Naser Johar Asid Johar’s happiness to meet his family members after 22 years was short-lived. He was sent back from the Delhi airport on Saturday, saying that he did not have permission from the Jordan embassy to go to Jordan.
"The airport officials told me that I don’t have permission to board the plane," said Johar. He said he had all the required documents. "I had a proper visa and plane ticket," said Johar.
Johar spent 21 years in the Nagpur jail, after he was arrested in 1988 for opening fire at the Sahar international airport and was released in September 2009.
He was booked under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activates (Prevention) Act (TADA) and later convicted and sentenced to 23 years rigorous imprisonment. All his documents to prove citizenship were misplaced during his arrest. Johar neither has his passport nor army card. He has a photocopy of his passport issued by the Jordanian government.
"I think I was sent back because there was a miscommunication between the embassy and the airport authorities," he said. "On Monday I will go again to the embassy to sort out the problem." Johar has been staying at the Delhi government’s guest house for 20 days. "I don’t know how long it will take to meet my family," he said.
Since his release in September, he had been residing at the Andheri Crime Branch unit. His parents sent him money to spend on daily necessities.
Johar speaks fluent Hindi, which he attributes to his long stay in prison. He misses his mother the most. "I guess my mother is alive only on the belief that she will see me one day," he said. Despite repeated attempts, HT could not contact the officials at the Jordan embassy in Delhi.
