The anti-corruption branch (ACB) of CBI, Mumbai, arrested inspector RK Gavit, head constable Dashrath Patel and constable Chandu Patel for allegedly demanding the bribe for not implicating the jeweller in a false case of purchasing stolen jewellery.

A senior CBI officer claimed Gavit had demanded the bribe from the jeweller following which he [jeweller] registered a complaint with the CBI.

The CBI recorded the telephonic conversation between the jeweller and Gavit, wherein it was fixed to give the bribe in Gavit’s office on Sunday evening.

At Gavit’s office, Dashrath allegedly accepted the bribe and handed it over to Chandu, who was to give it to Gavit.

A CBI team caught Dashrath and Chandu while accepting the bribe, but could not arrest Gavit because he was on bandobast duty. When Gavit learnt that his two juniors were arrested, he went into hiding.

However, the CBI team traced Gavit on Monday morning in Silvassa and arrested him too. During a search at Chandu’s house, the CBI found Rs 3.8 lakh cash and several bank accounts.
