In two separate accidents across the city, one woman was killed and two men, including a traffic constable, were seriously injured.
In the first accident that occurred near the Ghatkopar Traffic Chowkie at LBS Marg on Monday, a 47-year-old woman who was sitting pillion was crushed to death when a speeding cement mixer brushed past the bike she was on. Her son, who was riding the bike, was injured.
Shamim Banu Salam Khan, along with her son Habibullah Abdul Salaam Khan (20), were going to their Bharat Nagar residence in Kurla (West).
As they were passing the Traffic Chowkie on LBS Road, a cement mixer, driven by the accused Rahim Bhusaniya Shaikh (24), brushed against their bike. Shamim Banu fell off the bike and came under the wheels of the mixer. She died on the spot. Habibullah escaped with minor injuries.
Senior Police Inspector, V V Bagwe of Kurla police station said, “Shaikh has been arrested for rash and negligent driving and causing death by negligence in addition to sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.”
Shamin Banu, is survived by her husband, four sons and three daughters.
The second incident took place on Tuesday, when a traffic police constable, attached to the Matunga Traffic Chowkie was injured, after a bus driver crushed his feet Dadar TT circle, where he was manning traffic.
Arjun Suryavanshi (56) was controlling traffic when a BEST bus driver who was instructed to stop by Suryavanshi, tried to zoom past him, and ended up crushing his feet under the rear tyre of the bus, the police said.
Police Inspector M. Sanap, from the Matunga traffic police chowkie, said, “The BEST driver has been identified as Sanjay Sakaram Majanjan.”
Mananhan has been arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving. Suryavanshi sustained a fracture in his left feet and injuries on his knee and shoulder.
