65-yr-old man run over by truck at Govandi, driver out on bail

The police arrested a 50-year-old truck driver after he ran over a 65-year old biker on Friday evening.

The police arrested a 50-year-old truck driver after he ran over a 65-year old biker on Friday evening.

The incident took place at around 7pm at RK chowk in Govandi when the accused truck driver, Surendra Singh, who is alleged to have been driving rashly, hit the victim’s bike, police said.

Zakir Shaikh, along with his niece Gazala Ansari, 35 were headed to Cheetah Camp on his two-wheeler.

Ramesh Naukudkar, assistant police inspector with the Govandi police station said “Initial probe has revealed that Shaikh was taking a right turn, when the truck hit him. Soon after the incident, a police wireless van reached the spot and rushed Shaikh and Ansari to Shatabdi hospital.”

The police said that Ansari sustained a fracture in her leg while Shaikh, who had sustained severe head and leg injuries, was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The police have arrested Singh who has been booked under the sections 279 (rash driving), 338 (causing grievous hurt) and 304 (A) (death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police produced Singh before a holiday court on Saturday; he was later released on bail. Regional transport office officials will inspect the seized truck to ascertain whether there was any mechanical fault with the vehicle.
