City to get 3 desalination plants

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning to set up three desalination plants with a capacity of converting nearly 500 million litres of sea water into potable water.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning to set up three desalination plants with a capacity of converting nearly 500 million litres of sea water into potable water.

"We will be floating in tenders to finalise the details," Metropolitan Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad said.

The declining resources of potable water have forced the development authority to look at sources of generating potable water, including desalination plants as they remove the excess salt and other minerals and convert salt water to fresh water. The MMRDA is planning to set up the plants in areas such as Mira-Bhayander, Vasai and Mumbai.
