Civic body may have 50% women corporators in 2012
Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan’s perseverance may just see women command 50% of the 227 corporator seats in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) by 2012.
What this means is that issues like gender, security, health, sanitation, water and consumer rights, which directly affect women, will finally be brought into the mainstream.
On Tuesday, Chavan said the bill that will provide 50% reservation for women in all local self-government bodies – including corporations and councils – will be introduced in the state budget session that kicks off on March 14. “The bill for 50% reservation for women at the local self-government level has already been cleared at the Centre,” Chavan said. Currently, the state follows a 33% reservation for women at the local self-government level.
