Old timers in Pakmodia street at Bori Mohalla in Nagpada, where Dawood spent his childhood and considerable part of his early crime life, say that he was fond of all 'good and lavish' things in life.
This includes his penchant for good-looking women and fetish for steamy hot Keema and Pulao from Alamgir Hotel at Temkar Mohalla and Nali Nihari from Noor Mohammadi hotel at Mohammadali Road.
Patel (as Dawood was known to his peers in the early 1980s) had developed a craving for 555 brand of cigarettes, only those packed in some gulf country, much before he finally fled to Dubai in 1984.
"He loves all good things in life. Although his childhood was spent in abject poverty, he did not want to continue living like that," said one of Dawood's former close aides.
He still believably smokes the same brand - almost like a chain smoker. Dawood's childhood friends in Temkar Mohalla and in the neaby Pakmodia street claim that he hardly liked branded cloths and preferred to wear only tailor stitched ones, suits or shirts.
One particular tailor, Genuis tailor at Bori Mohalla, used to stitch all of Dawood's cloths before he fled to Dubai.
