According to the Mankhurd police, the accused, Kaimal Mandal, is an electrician.

He lived at the Lallubhai compound in Mankhurd, where the victim also resided with her parents.

He was well-acquainted with the victim.

On May 20, Mandal lured the victim by offering her a chocolate. He took the victim to a vacant building nearby, where he reportedly raped her.

The police had initially interrogated Mandal and had given him the clean chit. Mandal, who believed he was safe, did not attempt to go into hiding.

But on Thursday, the victim revealed that Mandal had raped her.

“For a while, the victim was too scared to talk about the incident. However, a few days back, she disclosed that Mandal was the culprit. She also told us that Mandal had threatened her to keep quiet about the incident,” said police sub-inspector Popat Salunkhe from the Mankhurd police station.

“We have registered a case against Mandal under sections 376 (rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code,” said Salunkhe.
