The police on Friday registered a case of murder against a 27-year-old man for allegedly murdering the husband of a former corporator over a property dispute.
The accused has been identified as Almas Sahabuddin Geel, a resident of Shivaji Nagar.
According to the police, the incident happened near a mosque in Shivaji Nagar, when Aslam Hassan (44) was going to offer Friday prayers.
The witnesses told the police that Almas was armed with a chopper. He came in Aslam’s way, which lead to quarrel between them. The witnesses added that the accused in a fit of rage stabbed Aslam. Aslam sustained four stab injuries on his chest and rib area.
The accused then threw the chopper and escaped from the spot. He later surrendered himself at Shivaji Nagar police station. “Further investigation is on in the case” said Deputy Commissioner of police Dilip Sawant.
Aslam was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital , where he was pronounced dead before admission, the police said.
The initial investigation done by the police reveal that Aslam is the husband of former corporator from Govandi, Anjum Fatima.
He was the trustee of Aaisha Education Trust, which runs a couple of school in the area.
According to a resident, who refused to be named, Almas’s mother had sold a property to Aslam for the education trust, about a year ago.
The accused believed that Aslam had bought the property at a very cheap rate from his mother. This led to tension between the accused and the victim.
They have had quarrels over this matter many times in the past, the local source said.
