A gang of six professional housebreakers was arrested from Shivaji Nagar last week, said the police. Several members of the gang are still at large including the mastermind who managed to escape.
The arrested men have been identified as Satya Narayan, Arun Chidambaram, Ranchod Rawal, Manikandan Nadar, Krushna Nadar and Raja Harijan. The gang has several cases registered against them across the city.
The police said the gang would first steal a car and drive to the shop they had decided to rob. They would break the locks on the shutter quietly by covering the lock with a thick cloth hitting the lock with a hammer just once. The shutter would break open and within minutes they would leave with the stolen goods.
They were wanted in three housebreaking thefts carried out in Charkop in which three men from the gang targeted three shops including a wine shop, the police said.
"Each member of the gang was well trained and only one person was assigned to break into a shop," said Ram Bandekar, assistant police inspector.
The amount stolen could be several lakh, said the police. They have been sent to judicial custody.
