The couple’s only son Sujit (42), a schizophrenic, had been serving and guarding their bodies for four days until the neighbours alerted the police after foul smell emanated from the flat.

The police are now contacting doctors to treat Sujit. The Goregaon police said there was not much to investigate in the case because no foul play was suspected in the deaths of Rajan (80) and Chandralekha Nair (75). “Their relatives have not approached us with any complaint,” said Ramrao Pawar, additional commissioner of police (North region).

Pawar said that their only concern was to rehabilitate Sujit and find a doctor who could treat his ailment. “We have contacted several doctors for Sujit’s treatment,” said Pawar.

Sujit, currently under observation in JJ Hospital, told the police that his mother had slipped in the living room and died.
