The clothes and the keys were recovered from Moghul’s bag after he had dumped them his room in the one-acre basement of the housing society. Moghul, the police said, lived in the society’s parking lot and had hidden the keys and clothes there before fleeing.

“The recovered material has been sent for DNA analysis,” said a crime branch official.

The police said that Moghul was paid a salary of Rs. 6,000. After killing Pallavi, he decided to flee to his hometown — Baramulla in Kashmir — but could not as he had no money. Eventually, he decided to go to his friend’s house in Surat. The friend, the police said, is not involved in the case.

The police further said that they questioned the owner of Borivli-based AH Enterprises, the security agency through which Moghul was employed at Himalayan Heights in Wadala.

“Moghul’s employer said they do not have a mechanism to verify the details provided by employees,” said another official.

The police said a separate case would be filed against the security agency for breaching licence conditions, following which the license would stand cancelled.
