Seeking monetary help to attend her school picnic proved traumatic for a 14-year-old girl.
The teenager was allegedly molested by a 27-year-old man, who was arrested on Sunday.
The accused, Uday Rane who lives in Navpada in Kurla (West), had lent money to the girl’s family in the past, the police said.
On Wednesday, he promised the girl money and told her to come over to his house. The girl agreed, thinking she could use the money to pay for the picnic.
“Once the girl reached Rane’s home on Saturday, he allegedly tried to molest her,” said Krishna Chowdhari, senior police inspector of Vinoba Bhave Nagar police station.
“The girl is from a poor family and they have already borrowed Rs 1,000 from Rane,” said Chowdhari.
The victim’s father suspected something amiss on noticing sudden behavioural changes in the girl who used to stay aloof.
“After much persuasion, she confided in her father, after which the family lodged a complaint,” he added.
