Mercury drops in city, chill to stay

After a rise in temperatures over the past few days, the city witnessed strong breezy conditions on Thursday that resulted in the mercury dropping 5 degrees in the last 24 hours. The minimum temperature recorded in the suburbs was 14.9 degrees Celsius and at Colaba it was 18.5 degrees.

The winds caused even the maximum temperatures to dip considerably. At 27 degrees Celsius, the temperature in Colaba was 2.7 degrees below normal and at Santacruz, the mercury stood at 28 degrees Celsius.

After Delhi recorded the highest single-day rainfall in seven decades on Tuesday, the wind directions in the city changed from north easterly to chilly northerly.

“A strong western disturbance [an extra-tropical storm that brings sudden rain and snow in northern India] passing over J&K caused the rainfall in Delhi. The upper air cyclonic circulation changed the wind directions in the city too,” said Ajay Kumar, meteorologist, India Meteorological Department western region.
