While the statue was intact, its glass cover was damaged in the attack, the police said.

According to the church authorities, three people came on bikes around 2am, threw stones at the statue and sped way. The incident was captured on the CCTV cameras installed in that area.

“We have not been able to identify attackers from the CCTV footage as they were wearing masks. We have given the footage to the police,” said Father Justin Kallely, public relation officer from Diocese of Kalyan.

According to Kallely, this is the first attack of this kind in that area. “There is no such incident has happened anywhere in Maharashtra in the last couple of years.”

SB Suryavanshi, assistant commissioner of police, said, “We are investigating the matter. A case has been registered at Khandeshwar police station. However, no arrest has been made so far.”
