Nehru Nagar rape: Witness who found one of the victims deposes

The person who discovered the body of nine-year-old girl allegedly, raped and murdered by 19-year-old boy at Kurla’s Nehru Nagar area, deposed in the sessions court on Tuesday.
“The witness identified various objects that he discovered around the body as well as details of how he discovered it”, said special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat. The witness testified that he found the body in a vacant shanty at Nehru Nagar’s Vatsalatai Nagar slum, on June 19, after neighbours complained of foul smell, Gharat said.
“When he (the witness) broke open the lock and he found the body of the girl. Her legs were tied up with a nylon rope and clothes torn,” said Gharat. The girl had gone missing on June 5. A medical report confirmed the girl had been raped following with the accused, an employee of a local cable operator was arrested. Sheikh was arrested on July 1 on the charges of raping and murdering a minor girl.
The Nehru Nagar area of Kurla had been rocked by rape and murder of several small girls. This accused was arrested in connection with one such case. The police on August 13 had filed a 325 page chargesheet against the accused, which consisted statements of around 45 witnesses, medical reports, forensic reports, DNA test report.
While on September 17, the court had framed charges under section 302 (murder), 364 (Kidnapping or abducting in order to murder) and 376(2) (f)(commits rape on a woman when she is under twelve years of age)of Indian Penal Code against the accused.
The case is likely to come up next on December 24 , when defense lawyer Amin Solkar may cross-examine the witness.
