The Thane Railway Police on Tuesday arrested a Norwegian for allegedly assaulting an assistant police inspector with a knife.

The officer, S.J. Mulla who suffered a deep cut on his left palm, said he was making general enquiries about the whereabouts of the accused, Aas Marten (47), when the latter attacked without a reason.
“Few passengers brought him to us around 8.30 pm to guide him with his destination. As I was enquiring of his whereabouts and where he wanted to go. Suddenly, he removed a seven-inch knife from his bag and tried to attack me. I held his hand to resist the attack, but it was so forceful I suffered a deep cut on my palm right down to the wrist,” said Mulla, who was admitted to hospital.
“He wanted us to contact the Norwegian consulate. As it was closed, we asked him to rest till morning and gave him food. He thought the police weren’t co-operating and attacked our officer,” said Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Kathawate.
Marten was on his way to Ernakulam when he boarded the wrong train leading to the incident. “He boarded Mangala Express at Kalyan and realised his mistake when passengers informed him about it. He tried to jump from the train near Kasara, fell and bruised his leg. The Kasara police gave him first aid and handed him over to the Kalyan police. He told the police he wanted to go to Mumbai, so they put him on a local train. He later learnt from fellow commuters that the local was a Thane local and not a Mumbai local,” said Kathawde.
The commuters offered to help him and took him to the railway police. “It was then he asked us to contact the consulate. However, since it was closed for the day we couldn’t do much. Around 11.35 pm, he lost his patience with us, thinking that we weren’t doing anything to help him and attacked Mulla,” Kathawde said.
The police have booked him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for attacking a government employee, for voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a public servant on duty and obstructing a government servant on duty and produced him in Kalyan Railway Court.
