Out on joyride, Mumbai teen mows down 1, injures 2 cops

A 17-year-old Mumbai student, too young to get a driving licence, took his father's Honda City out for a joyride, which ended in a tragedy after he ran over a 74-year-old man and injured two constables in south Mumbai on Wednesday.

The student of Jai Hind College left his Tardeo home at 7.30am and picked up a friend near Girgaum Chowpatty. He was driving at over 90kmph when he swung on to Dinshaw Waccha Road near Churchgate and lost control, police said.

The victim, Sampat Maroo, was returning home after his morning walk when he was knocked down and dragged for around 100m on the bonnet before he got thrown off.

Maroo, a resident of Ravindra Annex building in the area, was waiting to cross the road, when the driver lost control of the car and hit him, police said.

The panic-stricken student then pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, hitting two other parked cars and knocked down two constables identified as Yogesh Nijai (29) and Anish Keni (41), who were on their way to attend duty.

Maroo, the founder of steel trading company Maroo Steels, was declared dead on arrival at GT hospital.
