When American vice president Joe Biden reaches Mumbai on Tuesday, during his landmark India visit, potholefilled roads and traffic snarls are likely to welcome him to the city.
His journey from the international airport at Andheri (East) to his south Mumbai hotel is likely to be a bumpy one, with sources claiming that the stretch has at least 65 potholes, at last count.
Officials said that despite reminders to authorities concerned, the road continues to be in a bad shape.
A Mumbai police source said Biden will exit the Sahar International Airport from Gate 5 at around 8.40 pm.
He will then be driven through the Bahar Junction Road in Andheri (East) to the southbound stretch of the Western Express Highway (WEH).
The convoy will head to south Mumbai via the BandraWorli Sea Link, where the vice President will stay at the Taj during his two-day visit.
Traffic officials said the road right outside gate number five has at least 10 to 12 potholes, while the Bahar Junction stretch is marred by 22 to 25 potholes.
Bad roads could mean a journey through bumper-to-bumper traffic.
“In the rains, the travel time has increased by at least an hour because of this. The situation is worse during peak hours,” said a senior official from the Mumbai traffic police.
Various agencies are responsible for this mess.
While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is responsible for the maintenance of arterial roads in the city, the Public Works Department (PWD) is in-charge of the highways, while the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is responsible for most flyovers in the city.
“After we were informed of the American vice-president’s visit on Saturday, we approached the authorities again.
On Monday, they started repairing a few potholes,” said the official.
