The auto driver, whose three-year-old daughter was kidnapped and raped, alleged that he and his child were made to wait for six hours at Kandivli police station on Sunday before she was taken for medical examination at Nair hospital, which confirmed the rape.
"If that's not enough, the police have been detaining my three brothers," he said.
A few hours after the girl went missing on Saturday night and the family filed a missing persons complaint, she was traced to Malwani, where she had been abandoned by the rapist. Her father said he accompanied the police to Malwani and after picking up his daughter, they returned to Kandivli police station around 3.45 am. "My daughter was hurt. She had nail marks and bruises on her body. But they wouldn't let us leave. My wife, my daughter and I waited for six hours until my statement was recorded," he said. "Then they said we were to go to hospital to get her checked. I don't see why she could not get medical help immediately."
On their way to Nagpada police hospital, the driver claimed that a police woman accompanying them asked him if he had handed over his daughter to the rapist. "I said if she didn't trust me, she should take my child to hospital herself."
On Sunday, the police visited the family's home at Laljipada in Kandivli (west) and questioned his three brothers. "On Monday, three of us were detained for 12 hours each. We told them we were eating dinner with the child's mother and the other children when she was kidnapped, but they don't believe us," said one of the victim's uncles.
Vijaylaxmi Hirawat, inspector at Kandivli police station, denied the allegations. "The girl was immediately taken for medical check-up."
