A police sub-inspector was arrested a month-and-a-half after a person died in police custody under suspicious circumstances.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police P.M. More, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested police sub-inspector Yuvraj Mhaske for his alleged involvement in the torture of Suresh Patil who had been detained by Neral police on suspicion of committing a theft.
More said on April 3, the Neral police had taken Patil into custody to recover the stolen goods.
Patil, however, died following alleged torture.
“He died due to head injuries,” More said adding that the final cause of death is yet to be established.
The CID, during its inquiry found that Patil had been detained illegally and had allegedly been tortured.
“We have registered a case against four policemen and charged them with culpable homicide and voluntarily causing hurt to extort confession,” More said.
More said Mhaske was arrested on Wednesday and granted bail by a local court.
Inspector General (Konkan Range) Parambir Singh refused to comment.
“The case is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department and I am not privy to it,” he said.
