The district administration has been demolishing unauthorised structures in the district on a Bombay High Court directive.

Thane residents have opposed the drive as it will affect more than three lakh structures, housing more than 12 lakh people. Several non-government organisations have appealed to the high court to allow intervention in public interest petitions. The high court will hear the matter on Monday.

On Wednesday Chavan said, “The number of people getting displaced is huge. We have to take a sympathetic view and try to find a way out. Also the court’s order should be obeyed.”

“We will discuss options for providing the people with some relief,” said a senior official. Another meeting will be held on October 18.
