Women govindas fail to make 7-tier mark

While women govindas in the city showed as much grit and determination as their male counterparts, none of them could achieve the elusive seven-tier pyramid.

Leena Jadhav, 22, who fractured her left foot during practice cheered her teammates from the Parle Sports Club Mahila Pathak. The 125-member team from Vile Parle attempted a seven-tier handi to win Rs 5 lakh at Pratap Sarnaik’s handi in Thane.It managed to make six tiers in two attempts and had to forego the third attempt after a member was injured.

No woman govinda group has managed to build a seven-tier pyramid so far. “We will achieve the task next year,” said president Geeta Zhagde. Wadala’s Sri Ganesh Prathmik Shala govinda group, with 70 members, also had to settle for six tiers.

At Sachin Ahir’s dahi handi at Worli’s Jamboree maidan, a women govinda group made its debut. The girls from Maurya Govinda Pathak, Dharavi, managed to form a four-tier pyramid with a team of just ten, in less than five minutes.
