Music composer Amaal Malik says every film has a different flavour and he wants to compose music that gives identity to the film.

Singer-composer Amaal Malik doesn’t want to get stuck with one genre. Hence, the 25-year-old jumps genres to stay versatile. “I don’t want to get typecast in the industry, as people do that quickly here. I have to keep reinventing and jumping genres so that I stay different,” he says.

Amaal Malik composed music for MS Dhoni: The Untold Story in 2016 and this year, for Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Noor.

Amaal insists that every film has a different flavour, and he wants to compose music gives that identity to the film. “You can’t have a Sooraj Dooba hai (song in 2015 film Roy) in every film. Every film has its own storyline, and you have to compose a song and its music accordingly. You can’t just make five superhit songs for a film and think it’ll work every time,” he says.

Last year, he composed music for the film M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, and this year he has composed for Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Noor.

“In Dhoni, I had to follow one sort of soundscape. The story revolved around a sportsperson. I couldn’t do much. It still remains one of the toughest projects I’ve ever done. Then you have a quirky film such as Badrinath, so I had to compose songs accordingly. And then Noor, which is completely different. I used EDM templates for this film,” says Amaal.

He is also reluctant to compose music for films which are similar to the one’s he’s composed for in the past. “ I usually don’t sign those kind of films. Last year, I did 12-14 songs in films, and I had jumped genres in all of them. To go back again and do the same thing is something that I don’t really look forward to,” he says.
