Strumming the sitar is his passion, penning down lyrics is his way of life and giving melody to words is his first love. Grammy nominee and sitar maestro Shujaat Khan, son of Ustad Vilayat Khan, is making his Bollywood debut as a music composer with Pravesh Bhardwaj’s movie Mr. Singh and Mrs Mehta, which releases on June 25.

And he has another reason to smile — he has completed recording a live album with versatile singer Asha Bhosle, which is a musical dialogue between the two.

Talking to HT City about his first film venture, the maestro said, “I took this project because the music and the script complement each other. And I just didn’t want to do any of those item numbers, which is a trend nowadays.”

The movie is about two people caught between conflicting emotions when they find out that their spouses are in extra marital relationships. Khan says, “The music complements the moods and situations faced by the other two partners anyone can relate the songs with their real life situation.

About his upcoming album with Bhosle, he says that it is a live conversation between the two inside the studio, which they will further perform infront of a life audience in the coming days. The album includes some of his own compositions, a song by his son Azaan and more. He adds that he doesn’t want to slot this album to a specific genre as it is a mixed curry of strains of sufi, folk, ghazal, semi-classical and film music.
