Singer Arijit Singh, who has climbed the popularity charts after rendering his soulful voice to Aashiqui 2’s Tum Hi Ho, talks about his humble beginnings.
He’s currently riding high on the success of Aashiqui 2’s Tum Hi Ho and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’s Dilliwali Girlfriend, but singer and music producer Arijit Singh started his musical journey way back in 2005, with a reality show, Fame Gurukul. “It was a crazy experience. Back then, music reality shows like Indian Idol had become very popular. So I thought it would be a good idea to try my luck.”
However, fame doesn’t come that easy and Arijit had to go through a number of auditions to make it to the show. “I slept through my auditions because there were so many rounds and I used to get very tired after a while. So, I often dozed off,” admits Arijit candidly.Though the 26-year-old singer has come a long way since then, Arijit says a stint at the reality show did give him a contract with a music label, but it took him a long time to find a solid foothold in the industry.
“Like all participants, I also thought that now that I’m slightly known, I’ll get to sing playback songs. However, I had to put a lot of hard work for that to happen. In fact, in the meantime I worked with a lot of musicians and became a music producer,” says Arijit, who will perform in Gurgaon’s Lemp Brewpub & Kitchen this Saturday.
Interestingly, Arijit produced the music for Cocktail's Tum Hi Ho Bandhu and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’s Balam Pichkari and Kabira. He’s also assisted music directors such as Vishal-Shekhar, Pritam and Mithoon. “When I joined the music scene, a lot of big-ticket singers were not getting good work... It was a lean phase.
I realised I don’t have a chance in the playback field, so I decided to diversify. I became a music producer and assisted music directors. But it was a blessing in disguise. That time helped me in becoming a better musician. And, these days all singers are trying to learn various aspects of music,” he says.
Who is Arijit?
A Bollywood singer and music producer, who hails from Murshidabad, West Bengal. After participating in music reality show, Fame Gurukul in 2005, he has belted out many hit songs including Phir Mohabbat (Murder 2), Phir Le Aya Dil (Barfi) and Tum Hi Ho (Aashiqui 2), among others.
