A musical curator, radio host, writer and the founder of Classic Album Sundays, Colleen Murphy has many titles to her credit .Bringing her creation to India, Colleen’s inaugural edition of Classic Album Sundays (CAS), would have her in conversation with Ken Scott, a renowned British record producer and engineer, widely known for being one of the five main engineers for The Beatles, Elton John and Pink Floyd and others.
Colleen’s musical journey started on her “high school radio station” when she was 14 . “Later, I ran the biggest college radio station in the USA - WNYU - when I went to the university. After that, I was a radio DJ in Japan and then started producing syndicated radio shows and also started DJ’ing at clubs and parties. I think it has always been difficult. Even though there are more avenues for publicity today, there are a lot more people striving for attention. Usually hard work, diligence and talent pay off in the long run,” says the artiste, recalling her first encounter with music in her uncle’s room, as she listened to his radio in the dark. She was five-year-old then.
She shares, “While I was listening to the radio, all of the sudden, David Essex ‘Rock on bass’ came on and I was blown away. I listened to the radio and records throughout my childhood. I also worked in record shops and had my own radio show from the age of 14 until the present day. That is how I learned about music - all kinds of music from rock, pop to jazz and from dance music, soul, hip hop to classical.”
David Bowie is one of her all “time favourite musicians” because of his musical versatility, theatricality, artistic integrity and unique persona. “I grew up listening to The Beatles, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues and Crosby Stills & Nash and then moved onto the B-52s, The Ramones, Elvis Costello, New Order and The Smiths when I was a teenager. Now, I listen to everything.”
What should Pune expect from CAS? “To be immersed into a classic Beatles and a classic Bowie album in a new, exciting and engaging way. To hear the stories behind the albums with a first-hand account and to hear the album on vinyl and in incredible details on a world class audiophile hi-fi put together by Audio Lounge Pune.”
