Back after touring Europe, guitar-man Valentine Shipley performs at city restaurant as part of nine-day music festivity.music Updated: May 23, 2011 14:55 IST
Valentine Shipley is best known for being a one-man band. Armed with his acoustic guitar, this Delhi-based musician is performing live unplugged at the ongoing nine-day music fest at Mediterranean restaurant Miro in Andheri.
“I have been doing solo gigs for the past 8-10 years and enjoy every bit of it. Since music is all about communication, I feel I do it the best with just me and my guitar”, says the singer-performer, who is just back after a 17-show European tour covering Switzerland, France, Germany and Italy.
For the moment
Known for combining earthy vocals with his unique guitar-playing style, Shipley says that he loves being spontaneous when it comes to choosing his songs on stage, “I don’t go by a strict set-list. I decide on what songs to perform — whether covers or originals depending on the gig and the crowd.”
Starting his music career at the age of 4 when he performed his first concert at Lucknow, there has been no looking back for him. Influenced by Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Page and Larry Carlton among others, his style of music ranges from rock n roll, jazz, funk and blues to contemporary Indian music.
He has also developed his own act of combining poetry with music. “I have been inspired by (sage/poet) Kabir and I like to make his verses a part of my performance. So, my shows are more like a story-telling session as well,” he smiles.
Having worked on three albums in the past that include two guitar-instrumental collections, he feels that going virtual with one’s music is the best way to develop a listenership these days. “Facebook, Myspace and now Soundcloud are excellent tools to reach out to fans directly and they have been working wonders for every musician.”
Catch Valentine Shipley live, from 8.30 to 11.30 pm till May 29 at Miro, Svenska Design Hotels, Andheri (W).
