Every Odia and even every Indian who has had some contact with western Odisha would know the cult Sambalpuri folk song Rangabati. Now, Bollywood singer , with music director Ram Sampath, has given it a contemporary touch and it’s already a rage. The song was released on YouTube on July 3 and will be aired on MTV Channel’s Coke Studio Season 4 on July 5.
With her charismatic full-blooded voice and fetching presence, Sona Mohapatra gives a vibrant, contemporary touch to the folk song, without robbing it of its soul. The basic tune remains true to the original but the background music has a fair sprinkling of electronic sounds as padding.
The song also features another Odia sensation, who won India’s Raw Star contest in 2014. He will be singing a popular ditty Bande Utkala Janani, eulogising Odisha. The song also has a funky Tamil-English rap done by Tony Sebastian and Rajesh Radhakrishnan.
