4 farmers commit suicide in Vidarbha
NAGPUR: Driven to despair by mounting debts and damage to crops following incessant rains in the region that began last month, four farmers have killed themselves in last 48 hours in Vidarbha.
According to reports reaching here on Friday, among the latest victims, two were from Yavatmal while one each was from Wardha and Amravati districts.
All the farmers chose to kill themselves after consuming pesticides, the reports said.
Kishore Tiwari, the chairman of the Task Force of state Agriculture Mission, demanded that the government provide fresh loans to those distressed farmers whose crops were damaged because of the recent heavy rains.
He alleged that the banks are not cooperating with the farmers while disbursing loans this kharif season.
“The Union government should immediately intervene into the matter,” he urged.
