NASHIK: Heavy rain for the third consecutive day played havoc in many parts of the state with Nashik district witnessing 11 deaths on Wednesday alone. The flooded Godavari river forced the administration to shift 3,174 people to safer places to avoid more casualties. However, the situation was under control after intensity of rains dropped down to normal.

On Wednesday, Palghar district recorded 102.2mm, Thane 92.6mm, Raigad 83.6mm and Satara recorded 73.2mm of rainfall respectively, according to the data compiled by the rainfall recording and analysis wing of the state agriculture department.
Five major dams including Gangapur, Darna, Palkhed and Nandur Madhmeshwar were opened after they crossed danger levels, resulting flood-like situation in Nashik, said officials from Nashik collectorate.
“We have shifted 3,174 people from low lying areas to safer places. In addition, 16 people that were struck by floods at Karanjgaon were rescued with the help of NDRF teams, said a senior official.
Eknath Dawale, divisional commissioner of Nashik, confirmed that all doors of Nanur Madhmeshwar dam were opened as water flow had gone up to 2,40,000 cusec. At present, low intensity rainfall has reduced the water flow to 1,25,000 cusec.
On Wednesday, Nashik had recorded 81.7mm of rainfall. A Team of NDRF and army personnel are helping the local administration in the operation, another officer said.
Meanwhile, Satara district collector Ashvin Mudgal has sounded an alert to people, as gates of dams in the district are likely to be opened any time.
The local administration is equipping itself in view of the weather forecast. Heavy rainfall is expected in Satara district of the Sahyadri range in the next 48 hours. Mudgal said that all dams in Satara district have filled up to 70 to 80 per cent, and all of them are getting massive intake.
