RANCHI: Dhanbad, once a crime-ridden city that spurred Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap to make Gangs of Wasseypur, has the lowest crime rate in the country, according to the 2015 NCRB report.

Dhanbad registered 1,672 crimes last year with a total cognisable crime rate of 139.9 per lakh people, the lowest among the 53 cities recorded by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB).

The rate of murder per lakh people in the city was 2.4 while that of rape was 2.1, much lower than the national average of 3.7, the NCRB report said. The coal city registered a low rate of culpable homicide not amounting to murder at 0.1.

Dhanbad SSP Manoj Ratan Chothe said police has been able to prevent a large number of incidents using its intelligence network and preventive action. “Detection of cases and a large number of convictions have led to fear of law among the criminals,” he said. Police sources said that the Dhanbad cops have been able to track 70% of possible crimes and have taken preventive steps. Among other major cities of Jharkhand, Jamshedpur topped the category on industrial related riots with a figure of 27 as against the 35 reported across the 53 cities in the country.

The steel city, with a total of 3,541 cases of cognisable crimes, also registered highest number of incidents of caste-based violence with 18 cases, mostly between non-scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.

The state capital Ranchi recorded a total of 4,663 crimes at a rate of 413, with the rates of murder and rape at 4.6 and 6.1.
