NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Sunday filed an FIR against an unidentified online stalker after Congress leader Sharmistha Mukherjee’s alleged that she was being harassed on Facebook.

Mukherjee, a Congress spokesperson and daughter of President Pranab Mukherjee, lodged a case against a Facebook user by the name of Partha Mandal, who had allegedly sent lewd messages to her on Friday. While the user has closed his account, Mukherjee is learnt to have taken a screen grab of the lewd messages.

The cyber wing has registered an FIR under sections 67 of IT Act and 506, 354 of the Indian Penal Code. “We will approach Facebook and seek the IP address of the user. Registering an FIR makes it easy to get the account details. We will probe the case and identify the user,” said an officer.

Mukherjee had earlier told HT that initially she had thought of ignoring the trolls but because she believed the stalker would abuse other women too, she approached the police. She also tagged the user and alerted all her friends and followers on Facebook about him.
