NEW DELHI: Myanmar state counsellor and foreign minister Aung San Suu Kyi will visit India in October, her first visit to the country after the democratically-elected government came to power in Myanmar.

Suu Kyi visited China this month. The Myanmar leader will be in India as part of the outreach session with the leaders of Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa at the eighth Brics summit in October in Goa.

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (Bimstec), the outreach grouping, for the summit includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Formed in 1997, Bimstec aims to promote economic cooperation among South and SouthEast Asian countries.
