NEW DELHI: A group of Jats moved the Supreme Court on Wednesday against the Punjab and Haryana high court order putting on hold the state government’s decision to grant 10 per cent quota benefits to the community under the backward classes in education and jobs.

In March last year, the SC had struck down the Centre’s notification extending reservations to the Jat community in nine states. The SC had declared it unconstitutional. The UPA-II government had notified the reservation few days before the 2014 general elections.

After coming into power, the NDA government endorsed it before the SC. The Haryana government this year brought in the Haryana Backward Classes Reservation in Services and Admissions in Educational Institutions Act to provide 10 per cent reservations to the Jat community. The move was seen as an attempt to circumvent the SC verdict.

In February this year, the state witnessed unprecedented violence for several days after Jats took to the roads to demand the inclusion of the community in the OBC category. Thirty people died and 200 others were injured in the protests.
