The probe will be conducted by a retired judge of the Allahabad high court, and the inquiry committee has been asked to submit its report within two months.
The inquiry panel will go into the circumstances that led to the clashes, and make suggestions on how to prevent such incidents in the future.
Earlier in the day, the SC refused to entertain a public interest litigation seeking a CBI probe into the incident – saying it was for the Uttar Pradesh government to decide.
