A 12-year-old boy was mowed down by a speeding vehicle on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway on Tuesday evening.

The incident took place around 4pm when the boy was crossing the expressway near Ansal Plaza to go to a Krishna temple on the occasion of Janmashtami.

The police identified the boy as Shivam, a resident of Tugalpur in Knowledge Park-I. The boy was rushed to Kailash Hospital by passersby, but could not be saved.

The boy’s father, Ramdas, who works in Greater Noida as a daily wage worker, said, “Shivam was going to a temple along with a couple of his friends on Tuesday evening when a speeding vehicle hit him. The boys who had accompanied him informed me that it was a car.”

Akhilesh Tripathi, the station house officer of Knowledge Park police station, said, “The boy received fatal injuries to his head, due to which he died before reaching the hospital.”

“An unidentified vehicle mowed him down and sped away from the spot,” he said.

Ramdas said his son had come to the city only a fortnight ago. The family used to reside in Mahoba district and had migrated to Gautam Budh Nagar in search of employment.

The temple was offering sweets on the occasion of Janmashtami and Shivam was going to collect the offerings, the boy’s father said.

Tripathi said, “A case has been registered in the matter against an unidentified vehicle and the body sent for a post-mortem examination. We will scan footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the area to identify the vehicle involved in the accident and arrest the offender.”
