The government primary school in Vikas Nagar, Loni, is under the scanner of the district officials after local residents on Saturday made a video purportedly showing the students engaged in the makeshift kitchen of the school to prepare food.

According to officials, the incident took place at the primary school. The video allegedly shows a woman preparing food the midday meal and two students helping her out. The video was widely shared on the social media on Saturday.

“We have come across the video and two children are seen kneading the wheat dough for the midday meal. The woman who prepares the food is also seen in the video. The locals had come to us with the video around 3pm on Saturday and, by that time, the school had already closed for the day,” Indu Prakash Singh, subdivisional magistrate, Loni, said.

“It is also alleged that one of the rooms of the school was being used as a washroom and students were asked to fetch water to get the room cleaned. I will conduct an inquiry into these issues and the revelations made in the video. An inspection will be carried out with the help of basic education department officials,” he said.

The locals alleged that the students are also engaged in cleaning the school premises and teachers have turned a blind eye to the issues at the school.

“My brothers also studied at the same school. The students are engaged in preparing food and are also made to clean utensils. We complained to the school staff but they paid no attention to the problems we raised,” Dharam Veer, a local resident, said.

On the allegations, the basic education department has also initiated an inquiry and sought a report.

“I have directed the block education officer to visit school and conduct a comprehensive inquiry into all allegations and irregularities. The school already has a toilet. In case a room is being used as washroom, this will be inquired into as well. Activities such as getting students to cook and clean the school premises cannot be allowed,” said Vinay Kumar, basic education officer.

“If any laxity found, the principal of the school will be held responsible and action will be initiated,” he said.

The officials said as per norms, students cannot be engaged in activities such as cleaning or preparing food at school.

“The cleaning staff in schools is provided by the local bodies or through the district panchayati raj officer. Likewise, the teachers are responsible for checking the quality of food and taste it before distributing it to students,” Kumar said.

“The students under no circumstance can be engaged for any food making or cleaning activity. The kitchen staff is provided through local councillors in city areas or through gram pradhans in rural areas. It is their job to prepare the food,” he said.
