A day after an acid attack survivor was targeted with corrosive liquid in Lucknow, the Ghaziabad administration conducted raids in Sahibabad and found 40 tonnes of acid being sold in open market without prior permission and approvals by two units.
The move comes after the district magistrate directed the officials to conduct checks and raids in order to stop illegal sale of acid. The officials got in touch with the registered suppliers and got a tip off about the two units.
“One of the two had stored nearly 36 tonnes of acid in drums and sold it illegal to traders and in open market. This unit owner did not turn up. He had stored highly concentrated acid on his premises. The remaining four tonnes was found at another unit. It was used for commercial purposes. However, in both the cases, the required permissions could not be produced before the team,” said Prem Ranjan Singh, joint magistrate.
“Apart from sealing the two units, we have also served them notice to explain the reasons for alleged illegal storage. With regard to the unit where 36 tonnes was stored, we are taking legal opinion and will file an FIR or book the owner under suitable provisions,” Singh added.
The Supreme Court in 2013 had rolled out an order to regulate sale of acid and other corrosive substances. The order instructed the governments to issue acid-sale licences to select retailers.
Any outlet authorised to sell the liquid was mandated to ask buyers to produce address proof and a photo identity card, so that they could be traced in case of an untoward incident. Minors were not allowed to purchase acid and details of the sale were supposed to be provided to the local police station within three days.
However, in Ghaziabad, there have been several instances of acid-attacks. In the most recent case, 21 year old Gulista was subjected to a brutal acid attack inside her house on March 21. The young woman was about to get married, but was attacked with acid by an acquaintance after she rebuffed his marriage proposal.
